He was a wise and virtuous man, respected by all. One day, the king of Benares fell ill. The physicians could not cure him, and he was on the brink of death. The king, in his despair, called for the Bodhisattva. "O wise Brahmin," the king said, "my life is in your hands. Tell me, what can I do to be cured?" The Bodhisattva, with a calm and compassionate heart, replied, "Your Majesty, your illness is grave, but there is a cure. You must find the Jewel of Truth, which is guarded by a fierce dragon in the mountains beyond the river. If you bring me this jewel, I can heal you." The king, desperate for life, promised a great reward to anyone who could retrieve the jewel. Many brave warriors and adventurers set out, but none returned. The dragon was too powerful, and the journey too perilous. The Bodhisattva, seeing the king's plight and the failure of others, decided to undertake the quest himself. He knew the risks, but his compassion for the suffering king drove him forward. He prepared for his journey, taking with him only a few essentials and his unwavering determination. As he traveled, he encountered many obstacles. He crossed treacherous rivers, climbed steep mountains, and navigated dense forests. He faced wild animals and faced the constant threat of the dragon. Yet, his resolve never wavered. Finally, he reached the dragon's lair, a dark and fearsome cave. The dragon emerged, its scales shimmering like emeralds, its eyes burning with fire. It roared, a sound that shook the very mountains. The Bodhisattva, undeterred, approached the beast. He did not draw his sword or prepare for battle. Instead, he spoke with a gentle voice, "O mighty dragon, I seek not to harm you, but to obtain the Jewel of Truth for the sake of a dying king." The dragon, surprised by the Brahmin's courage and his peaceful demeanor, listened. The Bodhisattva then spoke of the king's suffering and the importance of compassion. He explained that the jewel was not for his own gain, but to save a life. The dragon, moved by the Bodhisattva's sincerity and his selfless act, lowered its fiery head. "Brave Brahmin," it rumbled, "you have shown me the true meaning of courage. Many have come with weapons and greed, but you come with truth and compassion. Take the jewel, and may it bring healing to your king." The Bodhisattva took the Jewel of Truth, which shone with an ethereal light. He thanked the dragon and made his way back to Benares. Upon his return, he presented the jewel to the king. As the king touched the jewel, his illness vanished, and he was restored to health. The king, overwhelmed with gratitude, showered the Bodhisattva with riches and honors. But the Bodhisattva, in his wisdom, refused the material rewards. "Your Majesty," he said, "my only reward is to see you well. True wealth lies not in gold or jewels, but in compassion and truth." The king, humbled by the Bodhisattva's words, understood the profound lesson. He ruled his kingdom with justice and compassion, inspired by the example of the wise Brahmin.
