Long ago, in the kingdom of Mithila, there lived a wise and virtuous king named Brahmadatta. He was known for his compassion and justice, and his reign was a golden age for his people. However, even in this prosperous land, there were those who, driven by greed and envy, sought to disrupt the peace.
One day, a group of fishermen, eager to catch the largest fish in the river, set their nets with great care. As they cast their nets into the water, they felt an unusually heavy pull. With great effort, they hauled their nets ashore, only to find a magnificent tortoise, its shell shimmering like a thousand jewels. This was no ordinary tortoise; it was a Bodhisattva in a past life, a being of immense wisdom and kindness.
The fishermen, seeing the tortoise's extraordinary beauty, marveled at their luck. They debated amongst themselves what to do with such a prize. Some wanted to sell it for a great sum, while others, more cruel, wished to cook it and feast upon its flesh. The tortoise, sensing their intentions, spoke in a calm and clear voice, 'Oh, kind sirs, please do not harm me. I am not an ordinary creature. I have lived in these waters for many years, and I have witnessed the ebb and flow of life. If you release me, I shall bring you good fortune.'
The fishermen were astonished to hear the tortoise speak. They had never encountered such a creature before. Fear mixed with awe. One of the older fishermen, a man named Dhani, stepped forward. 'And how shall you bring us good fortune, wise tortoise?' he asked.
'In this very river,' the tortoise replied, 'there is a hidden treasure, a chest filled with gold and jewels, buried by a merchant who perished in a storm. If you release me, I will lead you to it. The wealth you find will be enough to sustain you and your families for generations.'
The fishermen, their eyes gleaming with the thought of riches, agreed. They carefully placed the tortoise back into the water. As it swam away, it turned back to them and beckoned them to follow. The tortoise led them upstream, to a secluded cove where the river bent sharply. It pointed with its snout to a cluster of reeds on the riverbank.
'Dig there,' the tortoise said. 'Beneath the roots of the oldest reed, you will find your reward.'
The fishermen, filled with excitement and a touch of disbelief, began to dig. After much effort, their shovels struck something hard. They unearthed a large, ornate wooden chest, encrusted with barnacles and time. With trembling hands, they opened it. Inside, glittering in the sunlight, was a breathtaking hoard of gold coins, precious gems, and intricate jewelry. The value was immense, far beyond their wildest dreams.
The fishermen were overjoyed. They thanked the tortoise profusely, their hearts filled with gratitude. Dhani, the elder, spoke for them all. 'Wise tortoise, you have shown us immense kindness and generosity. We shall never forget your benevolence. From this day forward, we shall respect all living beings and never again harm those who do not deserve it.'
True to their word, the fishermen never again resorted to cruel or greedy practices. They used the treasure wisely, ensuring their families were well-provided for and even helping those less fortunate in their village. They shared tales of the miraculous tortoise, spreading the message of kindness and the consequences of greed.
The Bodhisattva, having taught the fishermen a valuable lesson, continued his existence, always ready to guide and protect those who showed compassion and respect for life. The story of the talking tortoise and the hidden treasure became a legend, whispered through generations, reminding all who heard it that true fortune lies not in material wealth alone, but in the purity of heart and the practice of virtue.
