Dasa-Brāhmana Jataka

In the bustling city of Savatthi, lived a wealthy merchant named Punna. Punna was known for his immense wealth and his shrewd business acumen. He had amassed a fortune through his hard work and clever dealings. However, despite his riches, Punna was often troubled by a deep-seated greed. He was never satisfied with what he had and was constantly seeking to acquire more, often at the expense of others. His heart was consumed by the desire for wealth, and he found little joy in his possessions. One day, a wise old Brahmin, who had renounced worldly possessions and lived a life of austerity, came to Savatthi. He observed the city and its inhabitants, noticing the prevalent obsession with material wealth. He saw Punna, surrounded by his riches, yet radiating an aura of discontent. The Brahmin approached Punna and, seeing his troubled mind, spoke gently, 'O wealthy merchant, you possess more riches than any man in this city, yet your eyes seem to carry the weight of a thousand unfulfilled desires. What troubles you so?' Punna, initially dismissive, found himself drawn to the Brahmin's serene presence. He confessed his insatiable greed and his lack of contentment. The Brahmin then shared his wisdom. 'Wealth,' he explained, 'is like a river; it flows and changes. True happiness does not come from accumulating riches, but from understanding their transient nature and using them wisely for the benefit of oneself and others. Greed is a poison that binds the mind, preventing one from experiencing true peace and joy.' The Brahmin taught Punna about the practice of dana (generosity) and the liberation that comes from letting go of attachment to material possessions. He encouraged Punna to use his wealth not just for his own comfort, but to help the needy, support virtuous causes, and share his good fortune. Inspired by the Brahmin's words, Punna decided to change his ways. He began by making significant donations to the poor and supporting monasteries. He practiced mindful spending, ensuring that his wealth was used for good. As he practiced generosity, he noticed a remarkable change within himself. The gnawing hunger of greed began to subside, replaced by a sense of warmth, fulfillment, and inner peace. He found true joy not in acquiring more, but in giving. His business practices also became more ethical, and he earned the respect and admiration of his community. Punna, once enslaved by greed, became a beacon of generosity, demonstrating that true wealth lies in the abundance of the heart and the spirit.

The Dasa-Brāhmana Jataka illustrates the destructive nature of greed and the liberating power of generosity. It teaches us that true contentment and happiness are found not in the accumulation of wealth, but in sharing and selfless giving. By practicing dana, we can overcome attachment, cultivate inner peace, and find genuine fulfillment. The story encourages us to use our resources wisely and compassionately.
