In the prosperous kingdom of Mithila, ruled King Nimi, a monarch renowned for his righteousness and devotion to the Brahma-viharas – loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. His reign was a golden age, marked by peace, justice, and the welfare of his subjects. The king was particularly devout, performing meritorious deeds daily and upholding the highest moral principles.

One day, the god Sakka (Indra), the king of the gods, was residing in his heavenly abode, Tavatimsa. He observed the virtuous King Nimi and was impressed by his unwavering commitment to righteousness. Sakka decided to test the king's devotion and to offer him a glimpse of the fruits of his good deeds.

Sakka sent his celestial charioteer, Matali, down to earth in a magnificent divine chariot. Matali approached King Nimi while he was engaged in his daily charitable acts and invited the king to ascend the chariot for a journey to the heavens. The king, trusting the divine messenger, agreed.

Matali then guided the chariot through the different celestial realms. First, they visited Tavatimsa, where King Nimi witnessed the grandeur of the gods and the rewards reaped by virtuous beings. He saw the heavenly palaces and the joyous existence of those who had accumulated merit. Matali explained how these celestial abodes were attained through good karma and righteous living.

Next, Matali took King Nimi on a tour of the hellish realms. It was a stark contrast to the heavens. The king witnessed the horrifying punishments meted out to those who had committed evil deeds – immense suffering, torment, and despair. He saw beings in agony, paying the price for their transgressions. This part of the journey was meant to instill in the king a deeper understanding of the consequences of vice.

After witnessing both the heavenly rewards and the hellish punishments, Matali brought King Nimi back to his earthly kingdom. The experience had a profound impact on the king. He had seen firsthand the results of both good and bad karma, reinforcing his commitment to righteousness and deepening his understanding of the cycle of rebirth.

Upon returning, King Nimi was even more dedicated to his virtuous path. He ruled his kingdom with renewed vigor, ensuring that justice and compassion prevailed. He used his experience to preach the importance of ethical conduct and the pursuit of merit to his subjects, guiding them towards a life of virtue and well-being.

The story of King Nimi's celestial journey became a powerful lesson for his people and for generations to come. It illustrated that the actions performed in this life have direct consequences, leading to either heavenly bliss or hellish torment in the next. It emphasized the importance of cultivating the Brahma-viharas and living a life free from malice and greed.
