In the ancient city of Jetuttara, lived a prince named Jayasena, who was known not for his strength or martial prowess, but for his extraordinary intelligence and wisdom. His mind was like a vast ocean, capable of navigating the deepest currents of thought and surfacing with brilliant solutions. His fame for wisdom spread far and wide, reaching even the ears of King Brahmadatta of a neighboring kingdom.

King Brahmadatta, a wise ruler himself, was intrigued by the tales of Prince Jayasena's intellect. He decided to test the prince's wisdom firsthand. The king devised a series of complex riddles and seemingly impossible tasks, designed to stump even the most astute minds. He sent these challenges to Prince Jayasena, expecting a clever, perhaps evasive, response.

Prince Jayasena, far from being intimidated, met each challenge with a brilliance that astonished the king. He solved riddles that seemed unsolvable, devised ingenious plans for impossible tasks, and displayed a foresight that bordered on omniscience. One such challenge involved retrieving a precious jewel that had fallen into a deep, dark well. While others despaired, Jayasena devised a method using natural elements and pulleys to safely extract the jewel without damaging it.

Another instance saw the king asking how to capture a wild elephant that had entered the city. Instead of brute force, Jayasena suggested a plan that utilized the elephant's own instincts and the terrain, leading to its capture with minimal harm. His solutions were always elegant, efficient, and demonstrated a profound understanding of human nature and the physical world.

King Brahmadatta was so impressed that he invited Prince Jayasena to his court. There, Jayasena not only solved the king's remaining puzzles but also offered invaluable advice on governance, economics, and justice. He showed how wisdom could be applied to practical matters, leading to the prosperity and well-being of the kingdom.

The most significant contribution of Prince Jayasena was his proposal for a vast underground tunnel system, the 'Maha-Ummagga' or 'Great Tunnel', to protect the city and its inhabitants during times of invasion or disaster. He meticulously planned the construction, considering ventilation, escape routes, and resource management. This foresight and detailed planning were unparalleled.

The king, recognizing the immense value of Jayasena's wisdom, offered him a position of honor in his court. Jayasena, however, chose to return to his own kingdom, where his wisdom was equally needed. He continued to refine his understanding and application of knowledge, becoming a legendary figure of intellect and foresight.

The Maha-Ummagga Jataka is celebrated as a testament to the power of wisdom (Prajna). It highlights that true leadership and problem-solving stem not from physical strength, but from keen intellect, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of the world. The story teaches that wisdom is the greatest asset, capable of overcoming any obstacle and leading to the betterment of society.
